How To Make It in the NEW Music Business
What does success mean in today's music industry? Because it definitely isn't defined the same way as it was just 10 years ago. Should you strive for a record or publishing deal? How can songwriters/artists actually make money in today's industry? Our panel of experts in diverse areas of the new music business will explore these questions and more, and give songwriters, producers and artists concrete ways to succeed with a music career.

Writing Between the Lines: How to Thrive Across Genres
We live in the era of the crossover. Famous recording artists are writing hit Broadway musicals, legendary hip-hop producers are scoring acclaimed TV shows, and many pop songwriters spend half their time in Nashville. And while all this cross-genre collaboration can open up all sorts of exciting creative avenues, it also presents challenges for the music creator trying to navigate a new musical world with its own culture and set of rules. On this panel, you’ll hear from songwriters who have found success in multiple genres. You’ll find out the benefits and drawbacks of working outside your comfort zone, and learn how to make the most of your talents, no matter what kind of project you’re writing for.

Parenting Your Song Babies [sponsored by Fox Rothschild]
Much like the individuals who make up communities and societies, songs are borne of diverse backgrounds and genres and often end up living together or next to each other on radio, charts, soundtracks, etc. A successful song may be covered over and over, lending even more diversity by introducing songs to other communities. Songs can migrate to other countries to become adopted in different languages, and all are born with legal rights. The panelists in this session will offer a rights primer and discuss the basis for copyright in the US Constitution. They will also answer questions on a variety of legal matters pertaining to the current state of copyright law in America and around the world.

Jeff Ellis - I thought this was supposed to be fun? Presented by PMC and RSPE Audio
Jeff Ellis
Coming up at L.A.'s iconic East West Studios, Jeff Ellis learned to engineer from the best in the business. But it was a chance booking that led him to go freelance, working full-time with Frank Ocean. The album “Channel Orange” was the result of their collaboration winning 2013 GRAMMY for Best Urban Contemporary Album with a nomination for Album of the Year.  From 2012 to 2016 the team went deep on the critically acclaimed “Blonde.”  A true artist, Ellis avoids production line music making by working hard to give every project a unique identity. Recent clients include Nick Jonas, Kate Nash, Akon, The Neighborhood, and Odd Future.

Under the Hood: The Confessions of Jermaine Dupri
Iconic writer-producer Jermaine Dupri is undeniably one of the most important creators in urban music history. From his groundbreaking early work with Kriss-Kross, Xscape and Da Brat to his smash hit collabs with Mariah Carey (“We Belong Together”), Nelly (“Grillz”), Lil’ Kim (Hard Core) and Monica (“The First Night”), JD has demonstrated his Midas touch again and again. While Dupri’s career is studded with highlights, arguably his most enduring collaboration is Confessions, an emotional powerhouse of an album borne of JD’s close partnership with Usher. Beyond its Grammy-winning, diamond-certified success, Confessions is a master class in turning raw emotions into unforgettable music. It’s unapologetically personal and yet universally relatable to scores of adoring fans. Dupri is here to go deep into the making of this landmark album –– the balance of the upbeat and the contemplative, the stories behind the lyrics, and how he and his collaborators ensured that an album with so many hit singles would cohere so well. If he's gonna tell it, then he's gotta tell it all!

I Write Songs, Not Tragedies: Emo’s Impact on Pop [Presented by Ride or Cry]
Note: This is a live podcast taping

Emo was once an era in music mainly overlooked by the general population. It looked different, it sounded different and for the most part had negative connotations. In recent years, we learned just how much of an effect this once niche style of music has had on pop culture. These days, a younger generation of music makers has married emo’s heart-on-sleeve narratives with pure pop and even hip-hop, defying stereotypes and cultivating new fan bases along the way. In this live podcast taping, hosted by the creators of Emo Nite, we’re bringing together the masterminds behind some of your favorite emo records, old and new. They’ll swap stories about creating the songs you love to scream at the top of your lungs, and discuss where emo is headed.

Good Man: Master Session with Ne-Yo
They just don’t make ‘em like Ne-Yo anymore. This jack-of-all-trades singer, producer, dancer and actor first made waves as a songwriter, penning hits for Mario (“Let Me Love You”), Beyoncé (“Irreplaceable”), Rihanna (“Take a Bow”) and many more. He then brought his silken voice and songwriting skills to a string of six top 10 solo albums, which yielded worldwide hits like “So Sick,” “Because of You,” “Miss Independent,” “Beautiful Monster,” “Let Me Love You” and “Time of Our Lives.” Over the years Ne-Yo has branched out from his R&B roots to embrace pop, dance, hip-hop and even country - but he has never compromised his sky-high quality standards. In this illuminating panel, Ne-Yo will walk you through the creative process behind some of his biggest songs. Find out how one of the music world’s most gentlemanly talents does it all.

Songs of Intelligent Life: Master Session with Charlotte Caffey & Anna Waronker
What do you get when a Go-Go queen and an alt-rock princess dive headlong into the weird world of alternative musical theatre? You get one of the most fascinating creative partnerships in recent memory. Charlotte Caffey is best known as the guitarist for The Go-Go’s, and the writer/co-writer of many of their most enduring hits (“We Got the Beat,” “Head Over Heels,” “Vacation”). Anna Waronker fronted the beloved rock band That Dog in the ‘90s, before turning to film and TV scoring. While the two have collaborated on everything from the Clueless TV series to family dinners (they’re sisters-in-law), they’ve spent the last decade creating acclaimed theatre pieces like Lovelace: A Rock Opera (about the infamous porn star Linda Lovelace), Hit the Wall (about the Stonewall rebellion) and The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe: Revisited. Caffey and Waronker will discuss their long and varied histories, their creative process and the joys of forging ahead into the musical unknown. Leading the conversation is music icon Peter Asher, who has produced James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Diamond, Diana Ross and too many more to count.

Welcome to Splitsville, U.S.A.: Where co-writers live together in harmony forever... like our songs
In Splitsville, songwriting splits are like people. Some live alone (100%), some live together as couples (50%-50%), some are in a threesome (33.33%, 33.33%, 33.34%), and some live happily together in groups of four, five or more. As songs are co-written with an increasing number of contributors, it is more important than ever that co-writers amicably agree on splits – in writing – that add up to exactly 100%, and share accurate publishing info with each other. Without working this out early in the creative process, bad title registrations and disputes can end important creative relationships and wreak havoc on a global scale, causing songwriters to lose royalties for years. By learning how to make some simple, positive changes to our creative business practices, songwriters can create a world of good – for ourselves, our families, our community, our industry, and billions of music lovers.

"She Rocks" Showcase [Presented by the Women's International Music Network]
Doors at 7:00

The Women’s International Music Network (the WiMN) announces the artists selected to perform at the fifth annual “She Rocks” ASCAP Expo Official Showcase, during the ASCAP “I Create Music” EXPO in Los Angeles. The free event takes place on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at OHM Nightclub at Hollywood & Highland. EXPO badge holders 18 years and older may attend the showcase. This year’s performers include headliner Priscilla Renea, plus Melissa Polinar, French Toast and 76th Street.

After spending nearly a decade as one of the songwriters behind some of music’s biggest hits by artists such as Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Pitbull, Miranda Lambert, Diplo and more, Priscilla Renea is poised to return to focusing on herself as an artist, with her forthcoming full-album release, Coloured, dropping this June. The country and soul-infused album features her powerhouse voice and engaging story-telling on urban-soul ballads like “Heavenly” and country-inspired “Gentle Hands.” More at www.priscilla-renea.com/.

Hailing from Texas, singer-songwriter Melissa Polinar first gained attention with the rise of YouTube, impressing fans with her blend of soul, jazz, blues and pop. Best known for her cover of Sting’s “Fragile” featuring India.Arie, and spotlighted in 2017 by SXSW during its first official Asian-American showcase, Polinar has also enjoyed praise for her most recent project, Rise at Eventide, featuring her original work. More at www.melissapolinar.com/.

Duo French Toast offers a clever take on blending musical styles, namely a modern version of the French Louisiana sound, which marries blues and soul with electronic music. Singer Brittany Pfantz is a Louisiana native with a voice that’s inspired by the gritty soulful sounds of her home state’s history. Multi-instrumentalist and producer Charles Calvet hails from southern France, bringing with him organic and electronic sounds that enable the duo to write unique, yet familiar music. Watch their new video here.

76TH Street is an American duo featuring life-long friends Spencer Bryant and Haley Gold. Bryant’s proficiency on guitar and all stringed instruments, combined with Gold’s strength on piano and percussion provide the driving force behind their sound. Last year’s release, Hurricane, features the song “You and I,” produced by GRAMMY Award-winning producer Robb Vallier. They’ve just released the single “Close” from their upcoming new EP.  More at www.76thstreet.net.

This official EXPO Showcase, celebrating its fifth anniversary, will be a focal point of the evening at the conference. The 2018 “She Rocks” Showcase presents a unique opportunity for female artists of all styles to perform in front of industry experts, media representatives, artists, publishers and more during the premier conference for songwriters, composers and producers.

Sponsored by Martin Guitar, Casio and 108 Rock Star Guitars, the showcase will take place on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at OHM Nightclub, located at 6801 Hollywood Blvd in Los Angeles, just steps away from the EXPO. To learn more, visit www.thewimn.com/ascapshowcase/.

THE SONGWRITING SCHOOL OF LOS ANGELES: How to Write Your Songs at the “Center of the You ’n I Verse”
The word memorable means two things: capable of being remembered and worthy of being remembered. Plenty of things are capable of being remembered. But if we have something truly worthy, it’s our job as songwriters to craft it so that it’s incapable of being forgotten. In this inspiring workshop about lyric, melody, and voice, you will learn to powerfully align the message and the messenger in your songs. At "The Center of the You ’n I Verse," your emotional intent becomes clear and you connect to your truth, the song’s power, and your listener's life, memorably.
