Dave Bassett

Songwriter, Producer
They say that luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. This could not have been truer for multi-platinum, award-winning songwriter and producer Dave Bassett, who has more than a dozen #1 hits to his name including chart topping hits with Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song” & Elle King’s “Ex’s & Oh’s.” After graduating college with a finance degree, the Illinois native did the sensible thing and took a job at a big Chicago bank. One night, he and his roommate borrowed a company car and attended a U2 show. It had to be fate, because Dave ended up on stage playing guitar with the band in a packed arena.“It was the point of the show where Bono says, ‘There’s nothing to rock ‘n’ roll but three chords and the truth. I know there’s got to be someone in this audience who can play guitar as well as I can’,” he smiles. “There I am in front of 20,000 people on stage with my favorite band. It was a pretty incredible three minutes, and it inadvertently landed me in Los Angeles.”Galvanized by the experience, he quit his nine-to-five and traded the Midwest for the West Coast. His first band Lost Luggage built a local buzz in Los Angeles before disbanding. His next project Three Day Wheely inked a deal with I.R.S. Records and toured nationally. Throughout this time, Dave accrued an invaluable perspective that would make him an indispensable writing partner for other artists down the line.“I’ve been in bands,” he says. “I’ve been an artist. I know the dynamic. I know the last thing you want is someone telling you what to do or changing what you do. As a writer and producer, I’m there to facilitate the artists’ creativity and provide a fresh sounding board and different angle. I’m not there to change anyone’s style, rather I want to draw the best out of them. The best success comes from letting the seed of the artist’s creativity bloom and take its course, revealing their true vision.”With the goal of bringing out the authentic creative spirit within each of his artists, Dave went on to co-write many songs on Shinedown’s 2008 Sound of Madness LP. He won the ASCAP Pop Award twice for his work on Shinedown’s #1 smashes “Second Chance” in 2010 and “If You Only Knew” in 2011 before going on to co-write their next two full-length albums, including the forthcoming Threat To Survival LP which also saw him producing and mixing. Dave also has a Grammy Award-winning song under his belt with Halestorm’s 2013 hit “Love Bites (So Do I).”Over the years, Dave has showcased his knack for working in diverse genres. It is this impressive versatility which has made him such a sought-after songwriter and producer for the likes of alternative acts such as Fitz and the Tantrums, Walk Off The Earth and Elle King to rock acts including Shinedown, Halestorm and Pop Evil, to mainstream names such as Daughtry, Josh Groban, and Idina Menzel. Bassett is also a go-to-guy among the music supervisor community for TV, films and advertising campaigns. His song Set It All Free was one of the only original songs featured in the movie SING. His songs and scoring have appeared in national spots for the likes of Toyota, Target, T-Mobile, Dunkin’ Donuts, Google, Nissan, Victoria’s Secret, Best Buy, FIFA, the Olympics, as well as film and TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy, Nashville, Royal Pains, CSI Miami, Friends with Benefits, The Judge, The Muppets Most Wanted, Runaway Bride and Bridge to Terrabithia. In 2015, Dave’s collaboration with Rachel Platten resulted in the triple platinum breakout hit, “Fight Song.” “That song has a great story behind it,” he recalls. “I had written with Rachel for a little over a year. We had some great material but none of the record companies were biting, so we decided to give writing one last shot, and she talked about just making a record on her own. She was pretty down. I’d been there too as a musician so I was like, ‘We need something inspirational. We need your fight song.’ It went from there. Now, there are so many inspirational videos with people and their own fights they’re going through. It’s cool to have a song on the charts, but to see the emotional reaction and how it’s helped fans is the biggest reward of all.” The success with Rachel Platten and Elle King has certainly underscored Dave’s ability to break new artists, and clearly demonstrates his passion for nurturing and developing talent. It is this very trait that drew him to sign alt-pop band, machineheart to his Two of Everything production company. After 9 months of developing the band, machineheart was signed to Columbia Records where they released the much buzzed-about 2015 EP In Your Dreams, featuring production and co-writing from Dave. Frontwoman Stevie Scott is yet another magnetic female force that caught Dave's eye (and ears) early on and is now on the cusp of a big breakout. With Dave's sonic guidance, Stevie and the band are well on their way to following the trajectory of Rachel and Elle. “I love putting something new on everybody’s radar,” he concludes. “That’s what gets me excited. If a song then creates any kind of positive energy in the world, that’s the ultimate feeling.”
